FXAA’s vision is that people living with Fragile X are connected, included, understood & empowered to live their best possible lives.

Serving on the Board of FXAA as a volunteer director is a rewarding way to support the Fragile X community and to help shape the future direction and impact of our organisation.

At our Annual General Meeting on Sunday 6 December 2026  five Board positions will be open for nomination.  Nominations for these positions are open to members of FXAA.   Four current Board members will re-nominate for a further term – Dr Lawrence Bott, Alison Evans, Andrew Fleming and Michael Miceli.  One Board position will become vacant with the retirement of Prof W Ted Brown.

FXAA is a registered charity, established in 1989 as an association incorporated in NSW.  We’re now a registered charity and national member-based organisation with an elected Board of 8 volunteer directors and two employed staff – our Executive Director and Family Support Counsellor.   Read about our current team here

ABOUT THE BOARD
The Board of FXAA provides governance and oversight of the organisation. It ensures that FXAA achieves the goals outlined in FXAA’s Strategic Plan which has four  strategic pillars –  Support & Connection,  Empowerment, Advocacy and Education.

Board members serve 2-year terms, up to a maximum of 4 terms.   Board meetings are held online every 2 months, and Board members are required to attend these meetings and the Annual General Meeting. Board members may also be involved in sub-committees which support FXAA by providing information and making recommendations. Such as, the FXAA Executive Committee and the Fragile X Scientific, Clinical and Research Sub-committee  The FXAA Board also has a position on the International Fragile X Premutation Registry leadership panel, and a position as a member of Fragile X International.

ELIGIBILITY FOR MEMBERSHIP OF THE BOARD
All eligibility criteria to be met:

• Current membership of FXAA: An individual who is nominated for Board membership and the people who make the nomination and second the nomination must all be current members of FXAA.
• Responsible Person criteria of the Australian Charities & Not-for-profits Commission  https://www.acnc.gov.au/for-charities/manage-your-charity/governance-hub/4-suitability-responsible
• Director ID: An individual who is nominated for Board membership must have a Director ID  from Australian Business Registry Services to verify their identity before appointment.

• National Police Check and Working with Children Check must be provided before appointment.
• Board members are required to attend scheduled Board meetings which are held online every 2 months.

• Brief written Expression of Interest including an overview of the skills and experience you would bring to the Board
