The FX webinar program for the remainder of 2022 covers a range of topics and features presenters with great expertise in their fields.

It is a pleasure to welcome new speakers to the program:

  • Kate Strohm – founder and CEO of Siblings Australia, with professional and lived experience in supporting siblings of children or adults with disability
  • Dr Alison Archibald – Associate Genetic Counsellor with Victorian Clinical Genetics Services, involved in clinical and research roles related to Fragile X
  • Dr Mark Livingstone – Deputy Medical Director of Genea’s Sydney CBD clinic, who has been treating patients dealing with infertility for more than 20 years.

And it is always a pleasure to welcome psychologist Dr Marcia Braden PhD back to present.

    Supporting Siblings of Children who have Fragile X syndrome
    Kate Strohm, Siblings Australia
    In this webinar for parents, Kate will discuss the joys and challenges for siblings, what siblings need, and the role of parents in supporting siblings. She’ll also address other sources of support for siblings. Kate is the founder/CEO of Siblings Australia. She has developed a national and international reputation for her work with families and practitioners, research and advocacy over a period of 23 years. Kate brings both personal and professional experience to this presentation.

Reproductive Genetic Carrier Screening for Fragile X syndromeOverview

Dr Alison Archibald, Victorian Clinical Genetics Services

Dr Archibald is the team leader for genetic counselling for the VCGS screening programs: non-invasive prenatal testing, maternal serum screening and reproductive genetic carrier screening (for cystic fibrosis, fragile X syndrome and spinal muscular atrophy). Alison’s PhD research involved exploring attitudes to carrier screening for fragile X syndrome. She has worked in both research and clinical roles.

IVF and Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis
Dr Mark Livingstone, Genea

Overview of Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis – the testing of embryos created through the IVF process for genetic abnormalities such as Fragile X syndrome.
Dr Livingstone is the Deputy Medical Director of the Genea clinic in the Sydney CBD. Mark completed his medical school training in Scotland before moving to Australia in 1991. He has been treating patients dealing with infertility for more than 20 years, first working in the Westmead Hospital Fertility Unit then moving to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1998.

Exploring the role of an Adult Sibling of a person who has Fragile X syndrome
Kate Strohm, Siblings Australia

In this webinar for adults who have siblings with Fragile X syndrome, Kate will reflect on sibling experiences and discuss the different roles siblings wish/are able to play. She’ll also address thinking about the future, family communication, and connecting with other siblings.

Understanding Behaviours in Fragile X syndrome (part 1)
Dr Marcia Braden PhD

Discussion of the neurobiology of Fragile X syndrome and how it impacts daily living and behaviours.
Dr Marcia Braden is a US-based licensed psychologist known internationally as a specialist in Fragile X syndrome and autism spectrum disorder.
