Clinics Queensland
The Queensland Centre for Intellectual and Developmental Disability (QCIDD)
aims to improve the health and well being of Queensland adults with intellectual and developmental disability. It does this through research, teaching and clinical activities. The centre is part of the School of Medicine at the University of Queensland and QCIDD is located within the Mater Hospitals, South Brisbane.
QCIDD provides clinical services at no cost to Queensland adults with intellectual or developmental disability who are 17 years and older. While people with Fragile X have always been eligible to access QCIDD’s clinical services, QCIDD is established specific Fragile X clinics in 2008.
These clinics are run by QCIDD’s Director, Assoc Prof Nicholas Lennox. Dr Lennox is a researcher, educator, and clinician. Since 1992,
Dr Lennox has specialised in the health of adults with intellectual disability after post graduate training in general practice, psychiatry and obstetrics. He has developed and tested interventions to improve the health and healthcare of people with intellectual disability, including the Comprehensive
Health Assessment Program (CHAP) and the Ask health advocacy diary.
Assessments and Reviews
The clinics provide a tertiary comprehensive health assessment service. This entails a thorough examination of all aspects of a person’s health care: both physical and mental health. The assessment will involve three one hour appointments and further follow-up and review appointments as required.
Referrals
A referral from the person’s GP is required before the appointment. A pre-appointment questionnaire will be sent to all persons referred to the Clinic. It contains questions about every aspect of the person’s health: including past medical history and current issues. QCIDD plans to liaise closely with other relevant health providers including medical specialists and allied health professionals in order to provide a comprehensive approach to meeting the health and well-being needs of adults with Fragile X.

As this is a new initiative, we will also be seeking feedback from those attending the clinics and from their families and supporters in order to further develop these clinics to meet the needs of those individuals.
